Car Finance in Saudi Arabia: How to Calculate Monthly Installments
How Saudi car finance works: reducing-balance formula, typical 3%–7% APR, down payment strategies, salary multiplier, and examples from Al Rajhi, SNB, Riyad Bank, and Toyota Financial.
Car financing in Saudi Arabia is one of the most common consumer credit products, alongside personal loans and mortgages. Whether you buy a new Toyota, a used Hyundai, or a luxury SUV, the math behind the monthly installment is the same: a reducing-balance (declining-balance) loan, with the rate and tenure varying by lender.
The formula: Monthly Installment = (Price − Down payment) × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1), where r is the monthly interest rate (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of months. The total cost of owning the car is the down payment plus all installments.
Typical Saudi car finance rates in 2026: new cars 3%–7% APR, used cars 6%–10% APR. Some banks run 0% promotions on specific models during Ramadan or end-of-year clearance. The exact rate depends on the bank, your salary, your credit history, and whether the dealer offers a subvention (interest subsidy).
A 20% down payment is the common default in Saudi car finance. It reduces the financed amount, lowers the monthly installment, and improves approval odds. Some banks offer 0% down on new cars during promotions, but you pay more interest over the life of the loan. The general rule: the higher the down payment, the lower the total interest.
Example: 120,000 SAR Toyota, 0% down, 4.5% APR, 5 years. Financed = 120,000. Monthly = 120,000 × 0.00375 × (1.00375)⁶⁰ ÷ ((1.00375)⁶⁰ − 1) = 2,232 SAR. Total of installments = 133,920 SAR. Total cost = 133,920 SAR. Total interest = 13,920 SAR.
Same example with 20% down payment: financed = 96,000. Monthly = 1,786 SAR (down from 2,232). Total of installments = 107,160 SAR. Total cost = 24,000 (down) + 107,160 = 131,160 SAR. Total interest = 11,160 SAR (down 2,760 SAR from the 0% down case). The 20% down saves you ~2,760 SAR over 5 years.
A longer tenure lowers the monthly but increases the total interest. Same 120,000 SAR at 4.5% APR, 0% down: at 5 years monthly is 2,232 SAR (total interest 13,920 SAR); at 7 years monthly drops to 1,668 SAR but total interest jumps to 19,872 SAR. Pick the shortest tenure you can afford to minimize total interest.
Banks require your installment to stay under 33%–45% of net salary. The exact threshold depends on the bank and your other obligations. For a 1,800 SAR car installment, you typically need 4,500–6,000 SAR net salary. Saudi banks also check your existing loans and credit card balances before approving — the Debt Service Ratio (DSR) is the key metric.
Three lender types in KSA: (1) commercial banks (Al Rajhi, SNB, Riyad, Alinma, Bank AlBilad) — broad range, competitive rates; (2) captive finance arms (Toyota Financial Services, NDF / National Finance, ABC Bank) — brand-tied, sometimes subsidized rates on new cars; (3) leasing companies (Budget Saudi, LeasePlan) — operational lease, useful for businesses. For personal buyers, banks are usually the most competitive.
Early settlement: most Saudi banks allow you to pay off the car loan early. Some charge a small fee (1%–2% of remaining principal), others do not. The savings on total interest can be substantial if you settle in year 2 of a 5-year loan. Use the Loan Calculator above to model your remaining balance at any point.
Insurance is mandatory. Comprehensive insurance for a new car typically costs 3%–5% of the car value per year, dropping for older cars. Third-party insurance is cheaper but covers less. Factor insurance into the true monthly cost of ownership. Saudi banks usually require comprehensive insurance for the duration of the financing.
Pitfalls to avoid: stretching the tenure to 7 years to lower the monthly, ignoring the rate on the captive finance arm vs the bank rate, skipping GAP insurance if your down payment is below 20%, and not negotiating the rate. Saudi car finance rates are negotiable — dealers and banks have discretion, especially on new cars during promotions.
Use the free Car Installment Calculator on this site to model your specific deal. Enter the car price, down payment, rate, and tenure, and the calculator returns monthly installment, total interest, total cost, and the all-in breakdown. It works for both bank and captive finance offers — the math is the same.
