Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia today?

The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%. It has been 15% since 1 July 2020, when it was raised from 5%. Certain supplies (exports, some medicines, international transport) are zero-rated, and a narrow list of financial services is exempt — your accountant can confirm what applies to your case.

How do I add 15% VAT to a net amount?

Multiply the net amount by 0.15 to get the VAT, then add it to the net amount. Example: 1,000 SAR × 0.15 = 150 SAR VAT, so the gross total is 1,150 SAR. Use the calculator above with mode = "Add VAT to net" to do this in one step.

How do I extract VAT from a gross amount?

Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate) to get the net, then subtract to get VAT. Example: 1,150 SAR ÷ 1.15 = 1,000 SAR net, so the VAT is 150 SAR. This is the right way to back out VAT — do not just take 15% of the gross (that over-counts).

Is residential rent subject to VAT in Saudi Arabia?

Residential rent for individuals is generally exempt from VAT in KSA. Commercial rent is subject to the standard 15% VAT. Always check the latest ZATCA guidance for the specific supply.

Do I need to round VAT per line or on the total?

ZATCA-issued tax invoices usually show VAT per line item rounded to 2 decimal places, with the total reconciled. For everyday calculations, rounding the final VAT to 2 decimals is fine.
